New York Army National Guard engineers begin demolition of Kings Inn

KINGSTON, N.Y. -- Soldiers of the New York Army National Guard's 204th Engineer Battalion began demolishing the Kings Inn, Oct. 18. The Army National Guard 's demolition of the deserted motel, located on Broadway, eliminates an eyesore and paves the way for development of the site. The demolition work will also allow the New York National Guard and Ulster County emergency responders to use the site for a joint civil-military emergency response drill, Nov. 5.  More

THE LEGACY 

In a show of faith in the redevelopment plan, Kingston located its new city hall and fire station in Rondout. However, the shopping mall, new industries and housing developers that the city had counted failed to materialize For years afterwards, the place where the city had remained a desolate wasteland. The building that had escaped the bulldozers, located on the west side of Broadway and East Strand, were boarded up and abandoned. Gradually the property was bought up by local investers, artists and pioneer business owners, who purchased the structures for a song and eventually re-stored them. In the end, it was this grassroots effort that brought Rondout back, planting the seeds for a renaissance that is still unfolding.

The former Kingston City Library building is located on Broadway in the center of Kingston, New York, United States. It is a brick Carnegie library built in 1903 in the Classical Revival architectural style.

It served continuously as the city's library until 1974, when it was closed after a newer library was built in the city's Stockade District. Since then it has been the property of the Kingston City School District, which has used it as the offices for the janitorial department at neighboring Kingston High School. In 1995 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It will soon be renovated into an arts and technology center. Read more.
